For years, Sweetzer Gourmet Popcorn founder Michael Norr’s family had a standing Saturday night pizza and game night with their closest friends at their home on, yes, Sweetzer Avenue. Due to the pandemic, the gathering relocated outdoors and became movie night. Since the best part of going to the movies is the popcorn, the movie would be stopped at the halfway point in order to microwave a few bags. It wasn’t too long until Michael, wanting a second popcorn option, purchased a popper and used the intermission to make kettle corn.
Thus, Michael's passion project was born ... though he didn't know it at that moment.
With kettle corn a success, Michael attempted to recreate a local theater's outstanding caramel corn. It did not go well. His first batch was overly chewy and not all that tasty. Not a surprise, since Michael is a fifth grade teacher who has no culinary experience. But, as someone who works every day to inspire kids to set goals and then work tirelessly to achieve them, Michael knew he had to try again. And again. And again.
Eventually, magic happened! His caramel popcorn was delicious. In fact, it was better than any he'd ever tasted. From that point on, Michael became obsessed with what could be done with caramelized popcorn. Saturday night pizza and movie night became a testing ground. Students, teachers and staff at his school became willing taste-testers.
And Sweetzer Gourmet Popcorn became a delicious business.
We love popcorn! We love innovation! We love bringing joy to others! Our mission is to make every batch of popcorn we produce convey those three loves.
